Definition
A featured listing or paid placement is any directory option that costs money in exchange for visibility or speed: a highlighted position, a sponsored badge, a faster review, a launch-day boost, a premium profile with more fields. Some directories only offer a paid route; most offer it alongside a free one, often in the final step of the submission flow.
It is a legitimate product of the directory. It is also the point where “free listing” quietly becomes a purchase.
Why it matters for a directory launch
Upsell dialogs are designed to be accepted on autopilot — and an agent on autopilot is the worst customer. A launch run needs a stated spending policy before the first form, and a way to record “the only usable route costs money” without either buying or pretending the platform was done.
How LaunchRepo handles it
The default policy in AGENTS.md is zero spend: no purchases, no card-backed trials, no accepted upgrades. The runbook has the agent inspect final totals and optional extras before submitting and stop at any required payment; the result is deferred_paid with a note and the observed price. The TinyLaunch guide documents declining an optional-services step and a second upgrade dialog on the way to a free slot. Whether to buy remains your decision, made outside the agent session.
