Micro SaaS marketing: a zero-budget strategy for small tickets

At 5 to 50 dollars a month, most marketing advice does not pay back. Here is the small-ticket math, payment fees checked on September 28, 2026, seven zero-budget moves and our own numbers from paid and free channels.

Micro SaaS marketing has one constraint that general SaaS advice ignores: each customer pays you very little, so every channel has to earn back its cost from a small monthly amount. This page is for solo founders with a niche product at 5–50 dollars a month and no ad budget. It shows the math first, then the channels that still work without money.

Why a small ticket changes the math

The first row is computed from the processor prices listed further down. Rows two and three are assumptions that show the shape of the problem, not measurements.

Fixed fees hit small prices hardest
A standard EEA card payment through Stripe costs 1.5 % + €0.25: about 6.5 % of a €5 plan, about 2 % of a €50 plan. Merchants of record like Paddle or Lemon Squeezy charge 5 % + 50¢, which is 15 % of a $5 charge and 6 % of a $50 one, but they handle sales tax for you.
Assumption: what one customer is worth
Say your plan costs $12 a month and the average customer stays ten months. That is $120 of revenue per customer before fees, refunds and taxes, and most of it arrives long after you paid to win them.
Assumption: what a paid customer costs
Say a search ad click costs $2 and 2 % of visitors end up paying. One customer then costs $100 in ads, and you need more than eight months of their subscription to earn it back, if they stay.
What our own ads did
In September 2026 we spent at least €132 on X ads for LaunchRepo: 15,829 visits, 8 checkout starts, no purchase we could attribute. Visitors from the founder’s unpaid posts on X opened checkout about 6 % of the time.

The lesson for a micro SaaS: spend time, not money, until you know your real conversion rate and churn. After that, paid channels can be tested with a hard cap instead of hope.

Payment fees and timelines, checked at the source

Payment fees are the one cost you pay on every single sale, so they matter more at 5 dollars than at 500. We read each point at the source on September 28, 2026. Your country and contract may differ.

Stripe (EEA account)
Standard EEA cards 1.5 % + €0.25, UK cards 2.5 % + €0.25, plus 2 % when a currency conversion is needed. Stripe Billing for subscriptions adds 0.7 % of billing volume on pay-as-you-go. Other countries have their own price page.stripe.com ↗ · Checked on September 28, 2026

Seven zero-budget moves for a micro SaaS

None of these costs cash. Together they make a micro SaaS marketing strategy you can run alone next to the product.

  1. Price so fees and support still make sense

Fixed per-charge fees punish tiny plans. Offer an annual plan or a larger tier so each charge is bigger, and ask your first users about price instead of guessing low.

  2. Choose a niche that gathers somewhere

A micro SaaS wins by being the obvious tool for one group: store owners with one specific problem, tutors, podcasters. If you cannot name where they talk, you cannot reach them for free.

  3. Do the outreach yourself

Answer questions in those communities, then message people who describe exactly your problem. At this ticket size, ten honest conversations teach you more than any ad campaign.

  4. List it where listing is free, once

Free directories and launch platforms cost an afternoon, not a budget. Expect a trickle of visits and a few links, not a wave of customers: our 31 listings brought about 47 visits in ten days.

  5. Launch where your niche already looks

Product Hunt, Show HN if people can try the product, or the marketplace of a platform your tool plugs into. Prepare one launch day and answer every comment.

  6. Write one page per question buyers search

Comparisons, how-to guides, templates. They take months to rank, but once they do, each extra visitor costs you nothing.

  7. Treat retention as marketing

At 5–50 a month, a customer who stays twice as long is worth twice as much with no new acquisition cost. Onboarding emails, fixing the reason people cancel and annual plans are the cheapest growth you have.

Where LaunchRepo fits, and where it does not

LaunchRepo covers step 4 and part of step 5: the repetitive submissions. It is a private GitHub repository that your own AI coding or browser agent runs.

One cost, spread over every product
The launch price is €99.98, paid once, not per month and not per product. If you run several small products, the same repository and product template serve each of them, so the cost per product drops with every launch.
It fits if you already work with an agent
Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or a browser agent reads the playbooks for 299 platforms, fills the forms in your signed-in Chrome and records every result in a tracker.
It does not fit if you want it done for you
Nothing runs on our servers. You start the agent, watch it and step in for logins, CAPTCHAs, 2FA and email confirmations. It never bypasses them.
It does not bring customers on its own
Directories are one zero-budget channel out of seven. Outreach, community posts, content and retention still need you, and they decide whether a micro SaaS grows.

Common mistakes

Copying playbooks from funded SaaS
Sales teams, big ad budgets and conferences assume large contracts. At 10 a month they cannot pay back.
Pricing below what fees and support allow
A 3-dollar plan loses a noticeable share to fixed fees and still sends support emails. Raise the price or bill yearly.
Buying ads before you know your numbers
Without a measured conversion rate and churn you cannot tell whether any click price pays back. Our own ad test is above.
Building for everyone
A generic tool fights funded products on their home turf. A narrow niche is cheaper to reach and easier to win.

Questions

What is a micro SaaS?

A small software-as-a-service business, usually run by one person or a tiny team, that serves a narrow niche with a focused product and a low monthly price, often between 5 and 50 dollars. It aims to be profitable and sustainable, not to raise venture capital.

What is a good micro SaaS marketing strategy with no budget?

Pick one niche, talk to people in it directly, list the product in free directories, launch once where your niche already looks and write pages that answer their questions. Work on retention from day one. Spend money only after you know your conversion rate and churn.

How do I market my micro SaaS if I have no audience?

Borrow one: answer questions in the communities your niche already uses, get listed where your buyers browse, and share what you build publicly as a person. Your first customers usually come from conversations, not from a launch.

Do paid ads work for a micro SaaS?

Sometimes, once you know your numbers. Multiply what a customer pays over their lifetime by your visitor-to-customer rate to get the most a click may cost. At 5–50 a month that limit is often below what search and social clicks cost. Our own X ads sold nothing we could attribute.

Spend your agent’s time, not your ad budget

LaunchRepo lets your own agent work through 299 launch platforms and directories while you talk to customers. The launch price is €99.98, paid once, for every product you own.
